Getting your NIF and NISS in Portugal (tax & social security numbers)

Your NIF (tax number) is the master key in Portugal — you need it to rent, open a bank account, work, and access healthcare. Your NISS is the social security number you need to work and contribute. With an address, the NIF, NISS, and SNS number can often be requested together.

NIF — your tax number

The NIF (número de identificação fiscal) is issued by Finanças (the tax office), free of charge and usually the same day, on presentation of your passport and proof of address. If you are still abroad, you can obtain one through the finance portal's e-balcão or by appointing a fiscal representative.

NISS — social security

The NISS (número de identificação de segurança social) lets you work and pay contributions. Apply online through Segurança Social Direta, have your employer apply on your behalf, or apply in person with a work contract; you receive the number by registered post.

Step by step

  1. 1
    Get your NIF

Visit any Finanças office (or use a fiscal representative if abroad) — free and usually same-day.

  2. 2
    Secure proof of address

A rental contract, property deed, or an atestado de residência from your junta de freguesia.

  3. 3
    Apply for your NISS

Through Segurança Social Direta, your employer, or in person with your work contract.

Do I need a NIF before arriving?

It helps — you need it to sign a lease or open a bank account. Non-residents can get one remotely via a fiscal representative or the finance portal.

Is the NIF free?

Yes, at a Finanças office. Third-party services charge a convenience fee for handling it for you.

Can I get the NIF, NISS and SNS number together?

Once you have an address in Portugal, these can often be requested together — check the gov.pt migrant services page.
